Plus One

The plus one system is already being talked about as a change for the 2008 season. And while I am all for perfecting the current system one way or another, we shouldn't touch the current system until all of the following happen first:

1. MAKE NOTRE DUMB JOIN A CONFERENCE.

2. MAKE THE PAC-10, BIG-10, AND BIG-EAST PLAY AN END OF YEAR CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP.

3. NO PRE-SEASON RANKINGS, THE FIRST POLL SHALL NOT BE RELEASED UNTIL OCT 1ST.

4. CREATE RULE THAT CONFERENCE CHAMPS ONLY MAY PLAY IN THE MNC.

5. REMOVE HAL MUMME FROM THE COACHES POLL. VOTED HAWAII #1 AND UGA #9 LAST WEEK.

6. PUT THE REMAINING INDEPENDENTS NAVY,ARMY,WEST KY IN A CONFERENCE.

7. REMOVE LOU HOLTZ AND MARK MAY FROM THE ESPN SET,INSERT JIM DONNAN AND FINEBAUM.

8. RENAME PAPA JOHN'S CARDINAL STADIUM "THE PIZZA PALACE".

9. EXILE TERRANCE MOORE (AJC) TO SIBERIA WITH A TYPEWRITER AND A HOMING PIGEON.

10. REMIND MR.INFLUENTIAL HERBIE OF THE VIDEO BELOW.

My suggested changes:

Cut the # of Div I-A teams from 119 to 100 over the next 3 years via some sort of survival of the fittest. Those that meet some objective standard for quality and if they don't meet that criteria then bump them down to Div I-AA.

Then I'd bundle up the remaining small schools into better conferences. You'd get rid of the Utah State and ULL type programs. It would toughen up the remainder a tiny bit.

Then I'd say you couldn't play any Div I-AA school more than 1 time per 4 years.

That would do two things:
1. It would force the remaining 100 teams to play each other 1-2 times more per season.

2. Give you better visibility into who was actually better than whom.

You can't have a playoff system in a world in which OSU can avoid playing ANYONE worth a bucket of piss non-conference. How would you seed a team like that? It's insanity.

Then...then...I'd look at a plus 1. If that didn't provide more clarity, then I'd look at a playoff.

The entire process of reshuffling described above might take 6 years. But the overall product each week would be dramatically better.

BTW -- I'd be fine cutting the number of crap teams to 90.

30 fewer suck teams playing fewer 4 games out of their conference each = 120 total games. That's 1.3 better games per remaining team.

PLUS -- by eliminating Div I-AA teams, you're probably adding another 1 game of quality per year.
